“Great location. Friendly, welcoming hosts. They have thought of everything. Comfortable room with a view! Great breakfasts. Don’t want to leave!”
Paula and David, Burley-in-Wharfedale
Martin & Andrew the owners, moved to Devon in 2015 after some 25 years visiting the South Hams, they set about searching for a suitable property that would allow them to create a comfortable home combined with the style of country Bed and Breakfast that they had come to enjoy in their travels around the UK.
After two years of ownership they have continued to sympathetically carry out improvements and build on the reputation gained by the previous owners Karen & Ian, and extend a warm welcome to you at Downton Lodge. Redecoration and refurbishment of the rooms has been undertaken and is complete. Built originally as a pair of farm labourers cottages around 1900, Downton Lodge has undergone several changes over the last century. During the 1960s for example it was a holiday home, playing host to celebrities such as Spike Milligan. A local farmer told of how – in the depths of a snowy winter – he transported members of the Rolling Stones on the back of his tractor from Downton Lodge to the local pub!
Martin and Andrew appreciate good accommodation and a friendly atmosphere along with good service, they are delighted with the feedback from guests that have stayed with them at Downton Lodge, some new ones and some who had stayed with the previous owners, the feedback received from all has been extremely complementary and positive. Numerous reviews can be seen on Trip Advisor.
“Every aspect of our stay was a sheer delight. You just have to see the wonderful stained glass windows throughout the house. With every attention to detail, our stay was an absolute joy from beginning to end. Thank you”
